The heart of the most sensitive and accurate instrument for detecting extremely small leaks is the mass spectrometer, which is used to measure the rate of flow of a tracer gas through leaks using vacuum, pressure or vacuum-pressure techniques. The mass spectrometer detects the tracer gas and converts it to an electrical signal proportional to the size of the leak. Helium is usually used as a tracer gas because of its unique combination of properties:
Helium is extremely rare in the atmosphere, so there is little ambient “noise” to interfere with leak measurement
Non-explosive, non-toxic, completely inert (no contamination of the tested product)
Will not contaminate and desensitize its own detector as is common with detectors using other tracers
Helium is a small, light molecule (mass 4) and will flow readily through extremely small leaks
The most advanced leak-test instrumentation and application experience in the industry.
Highest sensitivity, fastest cycle times, one-button start-up, and fully automatic operation, tuning and calibration are hallmarks of Vacuum Instruments Corporation (VIC). VIC’s advanced leak detectors and turnkey systems are ideal for precision, high-volume demands of industry and science.

A standardized solution for thermal leak testing equipment. Specifically designed for thermal leak detection applications. The Scepter is complete and in stock. We offer this concept for fast delivery of a custom system. The Scepter upon customer order would require custom tooling which is placed inside the chamber(s) to complete the system. The Scepter is offered as a single, dual or IHX configuration.
Custom solutions for medical device leak testing equipment. Methods of leak detection used by medical device manufacturers are evolving to meet increasingly stringent quality standards. Testing for leak integrity is critical in the device industry because product failure presents significant hazards to patients and healthcare professionals and liabilities for manufacturers.
Solutions for automotive power delivery leak testing. Combustion engine parts are critical in the Automotive Industry assembly process. To ensure these parts perform as designed they must be leak tested to ensure internal volume integrity.
Solutions for automotive thermal applications. VIC offers custom leak detection solutions with custom tooling placed inside the chamber(s) design to meet your thermal leak testing requirements. Our custom solutions offer leak testing for various types of thermal applications, such as Radiators, Condenser/Combo Coolers, Charge Air Coolers (CAC)/ Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) with multiple leak rates and sensitivity ranges. Custom solutions are offered in single, dual or IHX configuration.

Whether it’s in response to soaring gas prices or global warming, more and more people are looking into fuel-efficient, cleaner-running cars, such as hybrid electric vehicles and fully electric vehicles. Just like with fuel rails and other automotive components that require leak testing battery assemblies, covers and trays are tested with a helium hard-vacuum system.
Model No. Automotive Electric-Hybrid Vehicle Solutions
VIC offers custom leak detection solutions to meet your automotive drive train testing requirements. Parts of the automotive chassis that were once made from single sheets of metal are now often multiple injection modeled pieces of plastic coming together to form a single part. Leak testing is necessary to ensure that rain or other moisture does not enter the vehicle through the many connection points of the multiple parts. Our custom solutions offer leak testing for various types of drive train applications, such as torque converters and clutches with multiple leak rates and sensitivity ranges.
Helium Recovery Systems is the solution to lower the cost associated with tracer gas consumption While industries strive to meet increasing demands to offer higher quality products at lower prices, the need to efficiently recycle process gas becomes apparent. Helium Recovery features a group of high efficiency gas recycling systems that significantly reduce tracer operating costs. The Helium Recovery Systems offered consists of ASME coded pressure tanks, a set of compressor(s), gas analyzer, microprocessor controls and all necessary valving, gas regulation and piping.
VIC also offers Helium Recovery as a Service (HRaaS) for businesses that need the Helium recovery service but don't want the capital expense.
The MD-490S is a leader among portable tracer gas leak detectors. With a response time less than 0.5 seconds, sensitivity to 10-8 direct reading atm-cc/sec, and the ability to zero-out background, this is the most aggressive portable leak detector in the industry. The MD-490S is fully integrateable with our SmartChargeIII Evacuation and Backfill Station.
MD-490S Dual Gas is the most advanced sniffing Helium/Hydrogen leak detector designed specifically for industrial environments. The MD-490S Dual Gas utilizes VIC’s own industrial-grade mass spectrometer to achieve the highest sensitivity, fastest response-time, and smallest footprint. With a touch of a button, this dual gas unit can detect either Helium or Hydrogen tracer gases, while using a single built-in dual purpose calibrated gas leak.
The MS-40GT available either wet or dry pumping package is fully automatic, easy to use, and highly accurate. These advanced leak detectors are ideal for a broad range of applications including clean, oil-free testing.
The MS-50GT Dry includes all the standard features of the familiar line of MS-50GT high-speed production leak detectors, and is ideal for precise quantitative leak measurements in a wide range of applications.
The newest addition to the MS-50GT High Sensitivity series is ideal for ultra fast precise, quantitative leak measurements of Hermetically Sealed Devices. Manufactured in various configurations to meet leak test requirements.
Gas booster systems produce high-pressure process gas supplies from lower pressure sources, typically boosting a shop air source. Base units provide up to 600 psig pressure output. Options include higher pressure outputs and process gas drying capabilities. Can be configured for single gas or dual gas boosting.
