Argon Leak Detection

The heart of the most sensitive and accurate instrument for detecting extremely small leaks is the mass spectrometer, which is used to measure the rate of flow of a tracer gas through leaks using vacuum, pressure or vacuum-pressure techniques. The mass spectrometer detects the tracer gas and converts it to an electrical signal proportional to the size of the leak. Argon is usually used as a tracer gas because of its unique combination of properties:

  • Argon is extremely rare in the atmosphere, so there is little ambient “noise” to interfere with leak measurement
  • Non-explosive, non-toxic, completely inert (no contamination of the tested product)
  • Will not contaminate and desensitize its own detector as is common with detectors using other tracers.

Gas Handling Systems
A microprocessor-based system designed to blend two gas components, typically helium and air.  These systems provide a cost effective alternative to 100% tracer gas.

Gas booster systems produce high-pressure process gas supplies from lower pressure sources, typically boosting a shop air source. Base units provide up to 600 psig pressure output. Calibrated Gas Leaks

The OM Series gas calibrator leaks utilize a precision tapered glass capillary as the leak element. Gases pass through a single orifice, with the leak rate dependent upon size and gas pressure. To prevent clogging of the fine orifice, a unique particle trap is located between the capillary tube and outlet fitting.
