The Manhattan Project

The Manhattan Project was one of the most momentous events of the 20th century. It was a U.S. government research and development project from 1942 to 1945 that ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs.

The project was under the direction of Major General Leslie Groves of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and engaged some of the world’s leading scientific minds. Nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer was the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory that designed the actual bombs. The Army component of the project was assigned the Manhattan District as its first headquarters were in Manhattan; the placename gradually superseded the official code name.
